Back to index of "this and that in my life" pages by Donald Sauter.
The 51-acre farm was owned by Herman Benton Sauter (b. 1883, d. 1973),
my grandfather. It was located on N. Rolling Road in Baltimore County,
Maryland, in an area called Hebbville, outside of Woodlawn. (Coincidentally,
Woodlawn became the home of our nation's Social Security
Administration sometime in these same years in the early 1960s.)
When the farm was developed in the 1990s, it became Kingswood Commons.

You may find a few more pictures and read some farm memories of my father, Ben Sauter, set down in the last year of his life, in these web pages:
I have the notebook in which my grandparents kept a record of each and every little expense and receipt in 1961-1963, obviously for income tax purposes.
What you find for 1961 and 1963 are bare lists of figures under various categories such as "Gas", "Feed and Corn", "Dr and Veterinarian", etc.
This is surely of some historic interest, but for 1962, it was much better--each expenditure and receipt was described in detail on the exact date it happened.
The records for expenses and receipts were kept separate, obviously for the sake of adding up the totals. What I've done here is interleave the expenses and receipts for 1962 so you can visualize "Pop Pop" making his rounds throughout the year.
It shows connections that you'd never notice by examining the running expenses and receipts separately, and certainly not in the 1961 and 1963 bare lists. For example, you can often see exactly what the hired man, Mr. Hambleton, was paid for, such as helping with the hay sold to Mr. Kalb. And you'll see that almost every trip to the stock yard to sell a finished calf included buying a young calf to bring back.
Besides this activity in livestock, you'll see the farm grew fields of wheat, barley, rye and timothy, and the planter, cultivator, mower and farm vehicles had to be kept in good repair. There were always chickens, but apparently they were mostly for home use. Only in 1961 do we see eggs being sold.
