Ben Sauter, a character, in his own words

"You are old, Father Benton..."

I

When I was young and foolish,
It was my delight to go to
barn dances and Stay out late
at night.

II

When I was middle aged and
foolish It was my delight to go
roller skating and stay out late
at night.

III

When I was middle aged and foolish
It was my delight to get on my unicycle
and pedal with all my might and then
I saw only one wheel beneath me
And I almost died from fright.

IV

Now I'm old and foolish and very
much in love. But when I nudge up
beside her, She gives me a great
big shove.

V

Now I'm old and foolish
And the little I have left has
turned to gray. But I still have my
arthritis to cheer me through the day.

I have respected the original line breaks, figuring maybe they were inspired. I will let posterity be the judge.

I don't know about verse IV, but I can attest to the veracity of all the rest, especially the nut on the unicycle.
